Does getting a tattoo hurt? Let’s be honest

This is probably the most common question we hear in the studio. And honestly, no surprise — someone’s about to work a needle over your skin, so it’s good to know what you’re signing up for. So, no sugarcoating: Yes, it hurts.

But it’s also not as bad as some people imagine.

What does it actually feel like?

It’s not just one specific type of pain. Most people describe it as:

  • scratching
  • burning
  • a constant “rubbing” feeling on the skin

It’s not unbearable — it just gets tiring after a while. And that’s the key thing: it builds up over time. Placement makes a huge difference. This is where things really start to vary. Some areas are simply tougher:

  • ribs
  • feet
  • hands
  • areas close to bone

And some are much easier:

  • upper arm
  • thigh
  • calf

So the same tattoo in a different spot can feel completely different.

The longer you sit, the harder it gets

First hour? Totally fine. Second? Still manageable. Third and beyond? That’s where it gets interesting.

Your skin is irritated, your body gets a bit tired, and mentally you start to feel it more. It’s less of a sharp pain and more like: “okay… I’m kind of done now.” Your mindset matters more than you think. This is something a lot of people underestimate.

If you show up:

  • stressed
  • sleep-deprived
  • hungry

everything feels worse. But if you’re:

  • well-rested
  • properly fed
  • calm

it suddenly becomes much easier to get through. Same tattoo — completely different experience.

What makes it worse (from experience)

  • coming in on an empty stomach
  • partying the night before
  • lack of sleep
  • overthinking it for days

Honestly, these things ruin the experience more than the tattoo itself.

Can you make it easier?

You can — and it’s pretty simple:

  • get a good night’s sleep
  • eat before your appointment
  • skip alcohol the day before
  • wear something comfortable

Nothing complicated, but it makes a big difference.

Final thought

Tattoos hurt — sure. But it’s a kind of pain you can handle. Most people go through it without much trouble… and come back for more, which says a lot. And in the end, one thing matters most:

The pain fades.

The tattoo stays.
